How to win at writing in 2018

If you've always wanted to write a book, get in published, have your own author career and dreamed of finding your own novel in a bookshop, and set the goal of finishing said novel every year, but without success, here's all the advice you need.

Let me throw you some harsh realities.

1. Stop caring

Yes, you want to write something good. You want people to look at your writing and love it. You want to write a story nobody will be able to forget.

But that will never happen unless you write that book first. You've probably already heard from everyone that a first draft is supposed to suck. Now, stop believing you're the exception. Your book isn't going to look like that forever, but you can't make it good unless you have something written.

So stop caring about what people will think. You don't need to show it to anyone before you feel ready to. And most importantly, stop caring about what you think.

2. Make writing fun

You probably started writing because it was fun and fulfilling. But if you've been writing for a while you know that it isn't always. There are days or even weeks when we don't feel like it.

It's normal, and it doesn't mean that your muse is gone or that you should give up.

Writing is hard, but you can't just say that you have writers block and stop writing ever time it gets difficult.

You also can't keep writing if you hate it, because then there's just no point.

This is one of those things that is much easier said than done, but if you want to write, you need to find a way to make it fun even when it's not.

Some things you can try are writing with pen and paper for a change, see how many words you can fit into different sizes and shapes of paper, playing writing games or do challenges with other fellow writers.

3. Wake up one hour earlier

How much you are willing to sacrifice for your book at this point of the process shows how much success you'll find in the future. So if you can teach yourself to go to bed earlier and drag yourself out of bed one hour earlier, you're well on your way to being the author you dream of seeing in the mirror one day.

This forces you to throw all your excuses out the window and make a real change to your mindset, and that's what makes it so good for your productivity.

Just think how much you can accomplish by waking up before everyone else and working without distractions on what you love most. I'll tell you, it's one of the most incredible feelings ever to hit your word count goal at 7 am while watching the gorgeous sunrise outside your window before even having eaten breakfast.

These three little life and mindset changes will make you finish your book in 2018, if you are willing to go through with them and do the work necessary. You know you want that story out in the world, and that should be your biggest motivator.

Now go and do it.

Love, Em.
